What’s Your Legacy?

A Bequest to FCT is a lasting legacy. By making a provision in your will or revocable living trust, you can make a lasting impact, here in Freeport, which will provide for the future of this local land trust beyond your lifetime.

Making a bequest provision signifies what is important to you and affirms the values you consider most essential. It helps ensure that the natural places and character of Freeport remain by naming Freeport Conservation Trust in your estate plans. By doing so, you will help ensure this legacy continues for generations to come.

A bequest is a gift anyone can afford. It offers many options for leaving a gift that is meaningful to you. Here are four ways items to consider making a bequest to FCT:

  • Specify an amount of money to leave to FCT. Sample language might be - "I give twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) to Freeport Conservation Trust in Freeport, Maine."

  • Set a percentage of your estate to leave to FCT. "I give ten percent (10%) of my estate to Freeport Conservation Trust in Freeport, Maine."

  • Pass to FCT the remainder (all or a percentage) of your estate after all debts, charges, and other bequests have been honored. "I give to Freeport Conservation Trust in Freeport Maine, all (or a portion of) the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for the general purposes of the land trust (or insert a specific designated purpose)."

If you are interested in reviewing a sample codicil language to your gift planning to your existing will/living trust or creating your bequest, please contact Carrie Kinne for a sample codicil which may be helpful to show your estate attorney.

There are multiple types of options for planned gift charitable giving that allow you to make a gift with long-term impact. Your personal circumstances will dictate the best way for you to make donation. When compared to a traditional cash gift, planned gifts might provide greater income tax benefits, or current income, or estate tax benefits. We encourage you to talk with your attorney, financial planner or tax specialist before deciding on a course of action. Please note that FCT is prohibited from giving legal or financial advice and none of the information above should be interpreted as such. We encourage you to consult with your own legal counsel or financial advisor before deciding whether or not to proceed with a gift.
